What’s with 3D?

3D movies existed way back in the 1980′s, but it was only in the start of 2010 that it has been more developed into a more tangible product. But because of the very costly hardware, 3D films are not given much importance within the movie industry. And aside from the hardware, there are also processes that are necessary in making a 3-dimensional movie.

3D movies had a global reappearance back in the 1980′s and 1990′s when IMAX theaters dominated the high end cinema industry and also several venues themed by Disney. Currently, 3D movies are slowly becoming more and more successful as time goes by, especially after the worldwide success of Avatar in December, 2009.

But what is a 3-dimensional movie? A 3-dimensional movie is a motion picture that enhances the illusion of depth perception. The type of technology being used in creating a 3-dimensional film is derived from stereoscopic photography. A special motion picture camera is being used to tape the images as seen from two perspectives, plus special projection hardware and/or eyewear is also used to provide the illusion of depth when watching a 3-dimensional film.

Different entertainment-related companies within the movie industry have now switched to 3D in most of their movies. The major reason for this is that 3-dimensional movies are now becoming one of the biggest moneymakers in the world, particularly in Hollywood.

Various companies made their own versions of 3D movies to be part of the current thrill and hype that surrounds the greatest chartbuster of all time, Avatar. Avatar, directed by James Cameron earned as much as 2.4 billion dollars in worldwide ticket sales, numbers that make this particular movie the highest grossing film to have ever been created.

Many are wondering why everyone is crazy when it comes to 3D films. If only everyone could watch a movie in 3-dimensional technology, they would actually know what everyone else is just crazy about. Ever since Avatar was shown on the big screen, thirty-three percent of the income from box office movies came from 3D movies. These statistical results are in accordance to the results done by the International 3D Society.

What’s impressive about these figures is that only four 3-dimensional movies were included in that thirty-three percent coverage. Just imagine what the figures could have been if all the 3D films were also included in the study.

When people are trying out to figure out why a lot of television manufacturers, cable companies, and movie creators have gone crazy with 3D, know that customers will eagerly pay for more just to feel the thrill and excitement in watching 3D movies.
