Why is 3D Avatar different than other 3Ds?
I watched 2 movies in 3D: Avatar and How to train your dragon. It was said that Avatar 3D will be a new generation of 3D. Quote:
“… the entire screen has depth, taking on the appearance of a window through which the viewer is watching a ‘world’ on the screen, with a distinct foreground and background, rather than a flat, moving painting.” while the other movies have “flattish image with the occasional object ‘flying’ at you’.”
I had not watched any movies in 3D before Avatar came out, so I cannot compare 3Ds. But I can compare movies I’ve seen. How to train your dragon has a perfect 3D effect and what I’d like to know is, is it made in the same technique with a new generation of stereoscopic cameras like Avatar or not? Because I did not see any differences between, and I wore the same glasses I had had while watching Avatar. And does this mean that movies will now use the technique James Cameron developed?
the biggest difference is in the camera rigs used to film. with a traditional camera, a rig consists of two cameras mounted side by side to produce the seperate viewpoints required for 3d. james cameron worked with another guy to create a new rig that uses two cameras with the lenses situated closer than was before possible. also, the lenses of the cameras on cameron’s rig tilt to focus similar to the human eye. whereas typical 3d rigs simply change the focal length of the cameras, the rig used in avatar tilted the lenses to focus, accurately mimicing the action of the human eye and giving the film a much more natural 3d. this new generation of 3d really only applies to live action or motion capture filming though because the features of cameron’s rig can be easily duplicated within animation software.
