are cameras cheaper in japan
Will a digital SLR camera be cheaper if bought in Japan rather then Australia?

I live in Australia and really would like to buy a good quality camera. I am going overseas for the first time mid year to Japan and was wondering if I should wait until then to buy a camera if it is likely to be cheaper!!??

I asked this in the business section and this is what they said,

“I have lived in, worked in, and visited a lot of different countries, mostly in Europe and Asia, and I can tell you that I have not seen electronics and tech gadgets sell for less than they do in the USA. In Japan it was about the same as in USA for digital cameras, but in Germany and UAE (Dubai), and especially in Kuwait, as a few examples, prices for these goods are much higher than in the USA.

In the former Soviet Union, the cost of sustenance living (food and water) is lower than in the USA, but there also, electronics are more expensive.

It’s probably about economy of scale as much as anything. USA and Japan are giant economies and a huge shipment of electronics can all be sold in a short time within that one economy. This keeps overhead costs down, and this saves the customer having to carry those costs.

The European Union is an enormous economy as well, but there the issue is different. For the locals, maybe the electronics do not seem so expensive (I do not know). But as the Euro is so strong relative to the USD, anything priced in EUR is going to look expensive to us.

Bottom line is to buy it from a reputable Stateside online seller, and you will probably get the best price you’re going to find.”
