Way better than the WDTV

I first got a first generation WDTV and the slow interface bugged me. I decided to give the Asus O!play a try and wow. I put my movies in Vob format because quality is a big concern for me. But this player handles it all. I recently found out you could put the whole DVD into a folder and it would act like a regular DVD in a DVD player. You can go through the menus and choose what chapters you want to skip too. The only problem is the remote isn’t a DVD remote so functions like the menu button isn’t available. So navigating through the DVD and playing a chapter gets you stuck there and there is no way to go back to the Main Menu. If you hit the back button it takes you all the way out to the folder screen. 
The other new feature I found was you could connect a USB hub to it and will be able to play anything connected to that USB hub. I got 3-External drives connected and with the price of External HDD dropping this feature comes in really handy. I read that the WDTV hub feature was taken away with a newer firmware update, but they may have put it back. I have not experienced any reboot issues, but I am on the newest firmware. Sometimes the interface lags, but not as bad as the WDTV interface. My advice is to try it and see if you like it, Amazon will take it back if you don’t.

Awesome product

I got this for my living room, connected to my 52″ Samsung HDTV. This little player is just awesome. It can play almost any format I throw to it. The only exceptions are some video files I’ve recorded with my old digital camera, but I’m not worried about hat…I’ll just convert them to some other format. 
I have one of my old HDD (130GB) in an external case hooked up to it using E-SATA and I also share media content from my PC in the basement through Ethernet. It plays photos, music, video from all locations with no issues. The video and audio are outstanding. 
I would recommend this product to everybody.

Excellent performance and easy to set up

I bought Asus O Play in May and have been using it with both wired connection and USB drive without any problems. This is my 1st media player purchase and I chose it over the WD media player for its ability to play RMVB files and Ethernet conncetion. 

I connect it with powerline ethernet adapter to my Dlink dir825 router, which connects to a Acer Aspire Easystore WHS server. At the other end, it goes through HDMI to a Panasonic LCD projector with 720P/1080I output shooting movies/images to a 106″ Dalite screen. Sound is through the optical cable to my home theater receiver. I have about 1.5 TB of movie files in various file formats, incl. MKV, AVI, RMVB, DIVX, etc. File sizes range from a couple hundred MG to 9 GIG. Playing upto 9 GIG movie files without any glitch: picture quality and DTS sound quality are fantastic. 

I gave the unit 5 stars because it does an excellent job playing all files, and I had no problem going through the setup very quickly. But it had a couple minor issues which I don’t have better ways to avoid: 

1) When play HD materials with DTS or Dolby Digital sound tracks, I use “….RAW” (I forgot the full name of it but it is at the bottom of audio out options) to enjoy the better sound; when playing stereo AVI or RMVB files, I have to switch to the 2nd last audio out option “….PCM?” to hear the sound; You can put the audio out at the 2nd last audio out option and you will have sound from any type of file formats, but you’ll miss the DTS or Dolby Digital sound on HD files (they are turned to stereo); 
2) It seems to me quite redundant to have a mode selection, i.e., Music, photo, movie in this media player that forces you to go through each mode to play music, photo or movie files, especially when you connect it to your server through wired ethernet, and drills down to folders on your server or NAS to play files; for example, you need to select Movie mode, then drills down to movie folders in your server to play movies; and if you want to play a song, you can’t just browse to the music folder in the server, but have to back out to Music mode in the ASUS, then drill down through the wired connection again to the server, then to the music folder…I hope with new firmware update this can be changed. Or maybe it’s just that I don’t know how to do it now. 

Anyway, though this little player is not perfect, it beats my expectation by a big margin and I would definitely recommend it. I used to use my PS3 to stream media files, now it’s time to sell the PS3 and buy a couple more of ASUS O PLay.
