Initially backup cameras were used on tow trucks and huge vehicles that made it impossible for the driver to get a good view of the rear. In recent years however the technology of backup cameras has evolved and they are increasingly being incorporated into conventional cars.
Since LCD display screens, GPS and DVD players have become a popular feature in cars, it made sense to develop a backup camera that could aid the reversing process in normal cars as well. In order to provide a comprehensive view of the rear backup cameras feature a wide angle lens and in some cases a fisheye lens. The use of such a lens hinders the camera’s ability to pick up distant images but it gives the driver an uninterrupted horizontal view of the rare. Since the camera is meant to watch out for close obstructions it does not matter whether the camera can pick up distant images or not. The camera is fixed in a downward pointing position in order to give a view of obstacles on the surface of the floor as well as corners and cars.
