Fraudulent car trader on Ebay, money lost, what can i do? (UK)?

I paid a £200 deposit on a £1200 car, so that once i went up there to check it out if i liked it i would pay the other £1000 and drive it home.
I traveled from Essex to Sheffield, and after a grueling trip found the car was full of faults, and the dealer refused to return the deposit. After consulting Ebay and paypal they say that they will only bother with my case if i have photographic evidence that the car was faulty, and i didn’t think at the time of taking a camera which was foolish, but is there nothing more i can do to receive my deposit back? I don’t want this dodgy dealer to pocket my money for free.
There is nothing you can do; a deposit to hold a sale is not refundable (the seller stop making possible sales just for you).
It was a serious mistake to put a deposit for a car without having any idea of it’s condition.
As for eBay, well they already told you; now I doubt the owner will let you get close to the car again with a camera at hand; he might think you want to use it in court.
Sorry but you made many mistakes here (first you check THEN you give the deposit; to do it the other way around is crazy). You can always sue him but you might lose so at the end would be more costly. The best you could do is to give a bad review to this guy…and learn not to trust anyone.
