Which SLR camera do you suggest?
Nikon D5000 or the Canon T1i.
For my birthday, my Mom got me a gift card to get my fist SLR camera. When she researched where to buy, she decided that Costco had the best deals. I originally was going to buy the Nikon D90. When I went to buy it online, it showed it as no longer available. Now I don’t know what to get.

Help! The giftcard has $1,000 and since the D90 isn’t available anymore, I don’t really want to spend more than that.
The gift card is for Costco, so I’m kind of sh!t out of luck unless they get the D90 in again. Oh well, I can’t complain much for a thousand bucks! 
I have a long history with Canon and I will always recommend Canon over anything else. That said, Nikon has done a lot of catching up recently and their offerings are definitely worth a look if you’ve not already built a large collection of Canon gear.
And ain’t nothing special about Costco prices. I’d prefer to buy from a reputable photo dealer like Adorama or Bhphoto.
