photographers, know any good digital cameras that are cheap?

I want a really nice digital semi-professional camera, like the nikon’s and such, but they run up to practically $1000. I’m a college student so I’m not making that much- does anyone know of a good one that is reasonably priced with good attributes such as good zoom, etc.?
