What is the purpose of a viewfinder on a digital camera?

The same reason film cameras have a viewfinder. To compose and take a photo.
But with digital, most people use the Lcd screen….because it looks pretty and its easy to see.
The only time I would use the viewfinder is if my batteries were very low and I had a low battery warning. Its saved me a few times.
Obviously if you have a digital SLR camera, then you will always have to use the viewfinder (thats the nature of digital SLR)
