Macro mode on digital compact cameras? is the higher the cm the better?

i am trying to buy a camera, and as i prefer taking pictures using macro mode i want the one i can use to get the closest with.
on the jessops website, the specifications on cameras range from 1cm to higher numbers and i want to know is the higher the number the better, e.g. should i buy a camera that has a 10 cm macro rather than one that has 1cm?

The closer you can get to the subject, the closer focus you will achieve and the larger the subject will look in the final shot
