Is my unused film not useable now?
I had to go travel a couple of months ago and i had a camera and some film that I had not used yet. I had to get on an airplane and I’ve been told film would be unuseable if it goes through the x-ray machines. So can I not use my film now? Cause I have 3 unused film cartridges.
It depends on where the film went through and how fast it is. If it is 400 or slower, (200 or 100) and it went with the carry on stuff, then it is fine, go ahead and use it without worry.
If you put it in your checked luggage, then it may be toasted. That x-ray machine is much stronger than the one for carry-on items.
I have sent 800 rolls through the carry-on x-ray with no harm. And once, I had a 400 speed roll accidentally in checked baggage, and it was printable. (Fortunately, it was an outdoor roll, or it would have been very grainy)
Also, X-ray is cumulative. Going through 5 times will keep damaging it, even if the 5 times are months apart. I usually ask for hand inspection of film. I put it in a clear Ziploc bag in clear canisters. Almost always, they comply. It does take a few extra minutes. Actually, it is a US law to provide hand inspection of film, if requested, but if they say no I don’t argue with them. I usually don’t have film faster than 200 anyway.
If it was in your checked bags, I would just toss it. If it went through where you go, then it is fine.
