Motion Detector that works at night.?
Hi I am wondering if any of you guys/gals know of a motion detector maybe even part camera that works at night. I need it to be hidden because I am trying to catch someone stealing. The problem is they live with me, and I need this camera to be so small that only someone looking right at it would see it. I don’t want it to set off an alarm or anything like that, knowing what they did in the room and where they went would be nice. The cheaper the better thanks for any help.
PIR motion detectors (Passive Infra-Red) work at night just fine because they detect the heat given off by the body. Nearly EVERY motion detector you can buy for security purposes operates off of PIR technology. They usually have a curved window with many facets on it.
But what you really need is a camera with an infra-red illuminator which can feed into a computer with software that will detect the motion and record the video. The only problem with this is that most infra-red illuminators use LEDs that do have a little visible-red light radiating from them so if you look right at them you’ll see them if the room or outside is dark.
Most surveillance cameras that have built-in LED illuminators will have this problem. You can probably fix it by getting an infra-red filter to put over the front of the illuminator. If the LEDs are clustered around the camera, you will need to cut a hole in the middle of the filter for the camera lens.
You will need to disguise the camera in some way.
The infra-red filter can be found by searching for “IR filter” or “infrared filter”. This site claims that floppy-disc film is a good IR filter. It will also have a hole in the middle for your camera to look out. Good luck.

You can get cheap, wireless and wired cameras at X10.com with video digitizing, too, but the quality may be a little blurry. These cameras don’t have IR illuminators so you’ll have to find separate ones.

All in all, you should be able to do the whole thing with the camera and IR illumination with recording on a PC for about $100-$200.
A cheaper solution would be to get a wireless PIR motion detector and hide with a conventional camera to snap a picture when the culprit is detected. This kind of stakeout can be long and boring but costs a lot less. You can do a stakeout without even a sensor if you are in view of the thing to be protected.
