Camera Phone: An Introduction
As the name indicates, a camera phone is the mobile phone which is equipped with a camera. The camera used in the cell phones is usually a multipurpose device which can take still pictures and record a movie. The most useful purpose of a camera phone is its capability to make a video call. By making a video call, one can talk as well as see the person he is calling.
The development of the camera phone has enable people to share the captured media with the others via short-range communications like Bluetooth and infrared or through long-range communications like MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).

The camera phone has evolved from a phone with a very basic camera to take still pictures to a high quality digital camera that makes the DVD-quality video clips in last five years.
Initially the camera phones were simple color screen phones which had a basic camera to take still photographs that could not be shared by any means, but with time the phones were developed with the embedded digital cameras that could take pictures and make video clips too. In the current age, the mobile phones developed by the popular companies like Nokia and Sony Ericsson has produced models which have a very high end cameras and professional lens like Carl-Zeiss are used. The latest model of Nokia N-series N-95 has a five mega pixel camera and Nokia claims that it makes the dvd-quality video.
Social Impact
Camera phone have a broad social impact in the past years. Due to their portability and low price (as compared to fully functional cameras) are very convenient to use. So tourists use these phones widely. Meanwhile camera phones are also a threat to privacy, as they enable surreptitious photography. A user may pretend as simply talking on the phone or browsing the internet, drawing no suspicion while taking a photo. From time to time, organizations and authorities have restricted the use of camera phone in certain sensitive places because of privacy, security and copyright issues. These phones are banned in places like federal and state courts, schools, museums, theaters etc. Saudi Arabia banned the sale of camera phone nationwide for a short period of time. In
Singapore phone with cameras are banned in companies and facilities which are in association with national security. Some European companies have also banned camera phones to prevent its abusive use.
There is the occasional story of camera phones linked to industrial espionage, as well as some hacking into wireless networks. Camera phones have also been used to discreetly take photographs in museums, performance halls, and other places where photography is prohibited.
The ability to immediately share media from anywhere at anytime makes every citizen a potential real-time news-reporter. For example, on December 30, 2006, the execution of the former Iraqi president
Saddam Hussein was filmed by a video camera phone and was posted on the internet for all to see.
Laws Regarding Camera Phone Abuse
As the cell phone use is increasing day by day so laws are being passed to prevent its illegal use. Some laws are stricter in some places and more lenient in others, so it is important to know the laws present in the locations. Filming of high-profile structures, such as airports, railroads, bridges, tunnels, or certain landmarks may be banned. Photography and video making are also prohibited in courts, in government buildings etc. Countries like South Korea and Japan have passed laws that all camera phone being manufactured or being sold must make a clear sound when taking a picture.
