What is on the bottom of this camera?
I’ve seen it a few times on some of the nikon cameras. Maybe other brands have it too.

Is it removable? What is it?
It is a battery grip. It will hold two rechargeable camera batteries. It also has a vertical shutter release, wheel and focus point selection button. And yes it is removable.
I’m sorry I use Canon and my grip holds two batteries with none in the camera.
