nikon d5000 shutter life?
i purchased a nikon d5000 digital SLR camera.
i will admit i don’t know all the tricks of a DSLR just yet.
and while the sales girl was very nice, and helpful.
she failed to tell me that SLR cameras have a shutter life.
can someone explain this to me?
why does it have a shutter life?
what does this mean?
and what happens when it’s done?
can i replace the shutter?
is it expensive?
do i have to buy a whole new camera?
will my warranty cover it?
any help is MUCH appreciated!
Basically, shutter life is how long the shutter lasts before wearing out. The shutter is the mechanism within the camera that opens up and closes to allow light into the camera from the lens and hit the image sensor in order to create a properly exposed image.
Once a shutter is worn out, you may notice that your images in bright light are slowly getting brighter and brighter because the shutter can no longer keep up with the extremely fast speeds required to properly expose for such conditions. It doesn’t just break down suddenly though, it usually takes year and years of use to notice it.
You can indeed replace the shutter. It costs around $200 to do so. I wouldn’t worry too much about it though. Although the D5000 is tested to 100,000 shots, chances are it’ll last even longer than that. Furthermore, by the time your shutter wears out, you’re probably about 10 years down the road from today. That $200 probably wouldnt be worth replacing the shutter, since the camera is probably only worth $300 by then. What I’m trying to say is; don’t worry about the shutter life and just shoot !
