This is just my opinion but I don’t think one could pick a worse time to buy a D90 than right now. The D90 was announced just before Photokina 2008 so it’s due for a refresh any time now and the PMA 2010 show is less than two weeks away (Feb 19-23 in Anaheim, California). Personally, I’m not worrying about buying anything until after PMA. Once consumers have taken stock of the changes in the market landscape in the wake of the many expected announcements in two weeks, they’ll be in a better position to evaluate their options. New models bring the promise of better performance and features PLUS significant savings on existing models.
The D90 is a very tempting camera and a class ahead of the 500D – but it’s less tempting if it’s about to get a big price cut or be superseded by a newer model that you’d badly want instead. If March comes and there’s no D90 replacement, then one might as well take the plunge but I’d suggest giving it a couple more weeks.
I’m not suggesting that there’s anything wrong with someone buying now despite the proximity of the PMA show. I do think it’s worthwhile though for people to simply be aware that a major marketplace event is about to take place and to risk their money accordingly. I suspect that a lot of people will be unaware of the show until the week of or the week after. I’d hate to see anyone be surprised after spending that much money is all.
