Why are DSLRs now equipped with “live view LCD”? How many viewfinders do people need?
Shouldn’t camera makers concentrate on making the optical viewfinder a decent size, rather than this dumbhead marketing-driven gimmick?
Are people really gonna hold a D300 out at arm’s length?
I don’t use or miss Liveview…. For sports, news, etc, I feel the need to stabilize my camera next to me, with my eye pressed tightly to the viewfinder.
But, I can see the great advantage for tripod use. When I used to shoot video, I had an external lcd screen attached to my Sony Hi-8 to monitor my shots (that was before almost all camcorders came with them) I was too busy monitoring sound, keeping an eye on action outside the frame, (things and people move in and out of frame quickly in video) and mixing my mikes to keep the camcorder pressed to my eye.
In the still world, there are times when the photographer needs to work at a distance. I can image the photographer/director of a scene needing to make eye contact with or speaking directly to the subject(s) of the shot. Think about someone who takes children’s photos and needs to entertain, distract, or cheerup a scared child. That’s when the photographer needs to NOT be behind the camera, but slightly away.
However, I do agree strongly with one statement. I remember working with the huge viewfinders in my 120 medium format cameras. When might some DSLR camera makers work on giving us larger viewfinders for these cameras?
