Running Red Lights

Another part of the reason why red light cameras appear to be so dangerous is due to the people who are driving their cars. Because there are so many motorists who follow the person in front of them closely (or who simply do not leave enough stopping room), they wind up causing a major accident. A lot of accidents could greatly be avoided if the people driving vehicles left enough room inbetween each other. There is no reason why you should be closer than two car lengths to the person in front of you. Sometimes the idea of someone else “cutting in” causes people to close this gap. Other times, people drive to close to one another because they are trying to will the person in front of them to drive faster. This is simply not going to work.
There have been a few occasions where I have had to apply my brakes pretty hard at the last minute, despite the fact that I was not speeding, all because of a red light camera. Often times, red light cameras can be more dangerous- having the opposite of the intended effect that they were originally set up for. I have, personally, witnessed several accidents in which people have gotten into car accidents all because they were trying to beat a red light but then decided against it at the last minute because they didn’t want to receive a ticket in the mail. What happened? The minute the person slammed on their brakes, the person behind them didn’t have enough time to respond. Therefore, the person behind them wound up slamming into the person in front of them. It is simply not worth it.
When I was a police officer, I had to respond to several calls in which motorists were either seriously injured or had died due to injuries they had received as a result of someone running a red light at an interection. Think of how you would feel if you were the driver who was responsible for the untimely death of someone else. How would you feel if you had just received news that someone you loved and cared about had been killed in a car accident all because the other driver was in a rush to get home? Speeding is not worth the possible injury and/or death that it may cause. However, are red light cameras really as good as people claim they are supposed to be?
The main idea behind these red light cameras is that they will hopefully catch people who are breaking the law by running red lights. Running red lights is  ticketable offense. Not only is it incredibly dangerous, but it can actually result in a pedestrian, cyclist or other motorist becoming seriously injured or killed.
