what is metering in dslr cameras? how does it help?
i’ve just bought myself a canon eos 400d….this is my first slr camera…very excited with its features….i’m slowly learning all the functions of a slr…but ive never understood the function of a metering in a camera …how does contribute to ur overall image….after reading some reviews,i found out the eos 400d lacks “true spot metering”….now am i loosing out a great deal over the nikon d40x….which boasts a very presice metering
One camera or another. It can be a tricky situation.
Usually people start out with either a 35mm SLR and learn how to expose, compose and develop long before they move into the DSLR arena. Buy the time they do, they have a few lenses (Nikon or Canon) and just buy the camera that fits their lense.
Metering is the use of a photo/mechanical device to determine the correct exposure in any given lighting situation. With out some kind of meter, you would have a huge learning curve just learning how to expose the film (sensor) in a way that will give you an image. Over exposure will cause film to be mostly black, under exposure would give you a clear piece of film. These are extremes of course but the illustrate the point.
Yes, the three metering modes on the Nikon’s give the photographer a lot of options when it comes to having the camera pick the proper exposure.
I use the center weighted mode most of the time. It was the metering scheme that I grew up with using my old Nikkormat.
I use the spot meter when using my 12-24mm landscape/architectural lens. When I use other lenses I can choose the metering scheme that compliments the situation the best.
