Should you buy an up to date expensive mobile phone with a high-resolution camera or the phone you really want and a separate ‘stand alone’ digital camera?
Camera phones have improved a lot over the last 5 years, going from small screen blurry images to high resolution and a flash, and of course the ability to send the image to family and friends, (at a cost).
However does this really mean the end for digital compact cameras? it doesn’t seem to be the case at all in fact the opposite is happening, every year the digital camera sales around the world seem to increase, this year it’s over 120 million cameras, but does that mean camera phones are declining? Seems the opposite as well; camera phone sales are increasing also.
This means that consumers feel the need for both devices.
Personally I have a fairly descent camera phone for those moments when you simply have to take a picture no matter what the quality, and then there are times like going to an event like a wedding, birthday, or another important event where we want the best quality image possible and so the camera comes along too. And of course most quality cameras come with movie function so you can record great moving images just like a camcorder.
Lets face it, trusting your mobile phone to do a great job at a wedding is a bit optimistic, although Im sure that it’s been done by someone.
But what about the future, will the advances in mobile phone technology destroy the camera industry? do digital cameras really have a future?
Well in my opinion having an ‘ all singing all dancing’ gadget is great in principle, but camera technology is also advancing, new features are being developed, so how can you fit everything into one unit. The answer is you can’t, something is sacrificed, you will end up with a really good camera that you can make a phone call with or a really good phone that you can take descent photos with.
The future of digital cameras will certainly include the new projector option like the new NIKON, and eventually camera phones will have this too but at a lower quality, and personally I can’t wait to see this projector technology being used.
The ability to take photos or video then view them instantly on any wall or surface with a built in projector will open up all kinds of possibilities, and add to this the possibility of sending images anywhere in the world, uploading to your Facebook or MySpace page, editing on the fly and massive storage all mean digital cameras are here to stay. The popular Fuji Fine pix is a great example of a modern compact digital camera, light, great photos, movie function and massive storage capacity.
It will still be a few years before the photographer at your wedding pulls out his phone to record the happy day, and if he/she does then I would want a refund.
