Family Photo Shoot Hasting Waterfront Vancouver

When this family contacted me they were not sure what sort of photos they wanted, all they knew was that their extended family want family photos with the new baby! I suggested a park that I had been to before and I really liked located behind the PNE down by the Burrard Inlet. The Mother thought this was a great idea because she had not been there since high school and her kids had never been there.

The Burrard Inlet is a high traffic area for container ships and tugboats which do not make a very nice backdrop for family photos. I had the family spread out a blanket on the side of a small hill and positioned myself on the lower side of the hill so that when I took the pictures the only thing in the photo other than the family was grass and a great view of the mountains on the North Shore.

I had asked that everyone in the family wear a unified color scheme so that their cloths would not distract from the expressions on their faces. For lighting I placed the family with their backs to the sun to reduce the chance of someone squinting, the sun also created a natural separation and hair light. I had two exterior flashes with me both with white shoot through umbrellas, I positioned them at 45 degree angles in front of the family to create a triangle of light including the sun.

In post processing I added a skin softening filter to reduce the look of any blemishes that may have been on the family’s faces. I also added a High Key filter with the saturation turned all the way up, this made the color of there cloths, hair and eyes pop while diffusing the background slightly.

This family was very please with the finished photograph and had a wonderful day out doing something fun together that they had never done before. It was a good experience for all of us!
