Wa Redlight traffic cameras take shots 1 direction?
Do those camera’s in the yellow boxes take only photos of cars going 1 direction or from both directions of incoming traffic and also from the other sides of the interesection? And do they usually flash if they get someone?
Redlight cameras operate in all directions and take two digital photographs (one quickly after the other) of the entire intersection. It will show if a vehicle has continued further into the intersection after the first photo. If the second photo shows your vehicle has moved further into the intersection than the first one, that’s when you get a fine in the mail.
You (shouldn’t but) you can test it by driving up to the intersection and stopping just behind the lines on the road – as you are supposed to when the lights are red. And then (if there are no cars behind you) reverse back a couple of metres while the light is still red – it will detect that a vehicle stopped at a red light has now moved off the road pads underneath and *flash* *flash*… It’s not an offence to do that provided you don’t drive forward into the intersection if the light is red. I wouldn’t make a habit of it though, it may raise some suspicions – but it’s interesting to find out how it works.
