Can a 30gig IPOD be used to store pics from a digital camera. Traveling abroad & would like to use as backup.?

I know they make stand alone hard drives to download digital pics directly from the flash cards i.e. Epson P-5000 mutimedia storage viewer. I already own a 30 gig Ipod, so that would be a more cost effective option since I already own it. Can this be used to download digital pics without the use of a laptop and can it handle raw files?
